Gillets train station

Project type

[Residential design]

Date

2023

Design problem:
The brief asked to redesign an existing railway station into a residence. It was important to use sustainable and vernacular design approaches for a Heritage Building. The local culture, Zulu was to be incorporated.
The railway station was to be converted in a dynamic residential home for two people along with a Bed and Breakfast guest room.

Design solution:
The public area of the railway station was converted to a lounge, kitchen and dining area. The main bedroom with an en-suit is a larger bedroom with a private workspace. The guest bedroom has its own en-suit. Each bedroom has their own TV. The local culture, Zulu, patterns and woven furniture is used. Sustainable materials, such as rock and concrete flooring, with reusable pine wood has been used. The Victorian Heritage of the building inspired the rock dado design and the Victorian train booth design as the secluded dining area.
